The village of Gletsch in the canton of Valais is the junction where the Furka Pass and the Grimsel Pass meet. The village, actually more of a settlement, is in a strategic location between these two mountain passes.
Furka Pass is a mountain pass in Switzerland, linking the cantons of Valais and Uri. The pass height is at an altitude of 2431 metres. At the Furka pass lies the European watershed between the Mediterranean Sea and the North Sea. The Grimsel Pass links the Swiss cantons of Bern (Innertkirchen) and Valais (Gletsch) and is a watershed between the North Sea and the Mediterranean. The current pass road was built in 1894. Formerly, the pass, together with the southern Gries Pass, formed an important link between northern Switzerland and Italy. The pass height is 2,165 metres.
