The seven liberal arts, originally known by their Latin name septem artes liberales, were seven subjects that were part of the curriculum in ancient and medieval European schools and especially the universities. The seven subjects were Grammar, Dialectic/Logic, Rhetoric, Arithmetic, Geometria, Musica and Astronomia. They are called "free" (Latin: liber) because their purpose is the education of the free.
