The origin of the gerbera must be sought in South America, Asia and Tasmania. As early as 1737, Mr Gronovius, a botanist from Leiden, discovered a gerbera plant. He collaborated with the German doctor Traugott Gerber. Needless to say, gerbera is derived from his surname. In 1878, the gerbera was introduced to the United Kingdom, where it was further cultivated and improved. Over the years, breeding moved to the French Riviera. Nowadays, the Netherlands is one of the most important countries in terms of gerbera breeding.
