Georges Jules Victor Clairin (1843-1919) was a French painter and illustrator known for his portraits and scenes of oriental and exotic life. He was strongly influenced by Orientalism and spent a lot of time in North Africa, which is reflected in many of his works. Clairin often painted women in sumptuous, historical or exotic settings. He was a pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme and was also a successful set designer and illustrator. His work shows a mixture of academic precision and a dramatic, vivid depiction of the human form.
