The term geisha is generally used to refer to a company lady dressed in typical, strictly stylized clothing and who, with classical Japanese music, singing and dancing, pleasantly brightens up a company's evening. Literally geisha means "art person". In the 18th and 19th centuries, geishas were very common entourage on such occasions. Characteristic of the geisha are the artful wig of black hair, the whitewashed face with the red lips and a strikingly decorated kimono or silk dress that is knotted around the body in a certain way. Geisha's were considered paragons of beauty and refined culture.
