Second Painting
This oil painting 'Geesje Kwak and the secret of the universe - 28-06-22' is my second. The first was Geesje Kwak - 21-07-07. Drawings plenty but for some reason Geesje lends herself to a grand but time-consuming elaboration in oil. It has to be both her beauty and the sumptuous kimono's.
Gradually developing
When I made the penultimate drawing 'Geesje Kwak - 21-08-10', I had no idea it would result in a true oil painting. I mean, there are still so many drawings to put into oil. Only after I made the final graphite pencil drawing 'Geesje Kwak in space - 20-10-22' did an idea develop. Then in between came the Risque series and the self-induced painting frenzy that suddenly surfaced in February 2022. Last May, I felt it was time to finally start working on this one and so it happened.
No abstract style
From the start, I knew it would be all about the light she holds in her hands. That was obviously the theme in the underlying drawing. So I started to include certain elements of roundism, exactly as the drawing shows. Soon I realised that this would not work as it did in the drawing. I just liked the buttons in the tapestries too much. They had the same look as in the first painting, creating a perfectly realistic feel. I thought the roundist approach to the kimono was simply too much of a contrast to the tapestries.
Young as I was when I started drawing and painting I started my professional art career at age 35 after ending a succesful carreer as a business lawyer. I kept on handling my brushes and pencils after childhood but never dreamed I could make a living out of art.
