About the artwork
This impressive black and white photograph shows the entrance area of Timanfaya National Park on Lanzarote - a place where the raw elemental force of nature becomes tangible. At the centre of the composition are gently curving volcanic hills that take centre stage in an elegant contrast of light and dark. The surfaces are covered with fine lava ash, individual lava stones and structures are clearly visible in the clear air.
In the foreground, a winding road leads into the dramatic volcanic landscape and draws the eye into the depths of the picture. The route and the slightly elevated position of the photographer create a sense of perspective and literally invite the viewer to enter this place. The clouds in the sky appear to be softly modelled and contrast with the rough, stony surface of the earth. Light and shadow paint powerful lines across the mountain slopes, impressively emphasising depth and volume.
The black and white depiction emphasises the graphic effect of the scene, reduced to form, structure and contrast. This creates an almost surreal atmosphere, hovering between clarity and abstraction. The composition combines technical precision with artistic expression - a strong statement of nature in its rawest form.
