Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Gujarati: મોહનદાસ કરમચંદ ગાંધી) (Porbandar, 2 October 1869 - New Delhi, 30 January 1948), often called Mahatma Gandhi (Gujarati: મહાત્મા ગાંધી), was an Indian politician. After studying law in England, Gandhi left for South Africa, where he advocated for the Indian people. After returning to India he became a leader in the Indian independence struggle. Mahatma Gandhi was one of the founders of the modern state of India and an advocate of active nonviolence as a means of revolution.
Gandhi also worked for reconciliation between Hindus and Muslims in India. He was murdered in 1948 in New Delhi by an extremist Hindu. His birthday is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti. At Raj Ghat, a monument right on the river Yamuna in New Delhi, his favorite song Raghupati Raghava is sung and cotton is spun in the old fashioned way. source wikipedia.
