What you see in this portrait is the most important. Maybe your eyes are drawn to the butterfly, maybe to the gaze, or perhaps to the play of lines and patterns. It might also evoke something you can’t put into words — I’d love to hear it!
The portrait shows a female face partly covered by a butterfly, a symbol of transformation and strength. The background is made up of black-and-white graphic patterns that create an optical play and enhance the intensity of the portrait. Her fiery eyes and deep red lips stand out in contrast to the monochrome setting — a tension that often returns in my work.
Emerging Grace is part of a series to which I add five new portraits each year. Every painted work is translated into nine unique color variations, with this one being the Black Edition, carefully designed in Procreate. These digital versions are exclusively available via Werk aan de Muur/ Art heroes.
Curious about the rest of the series? You can view them on my profile here on Werk aan de Muur/ Art heroes. On my Instagram, you’ll also find my original paintings and giclée prints with handmade details.
If you hang Emerging Grace in your home, I’d love to receive a photo of the result.
I bring the colors — you bring the fantasy.
