In the background on the right you can see the rough contours of a village sunk deep in the winter snow. With thoughtful to spontaneous brushstrokes Vesin manages to depict a dynamic scene full of life in the vast white of the Bulgarian winter. The colourful clothes of the girls set a bright colour accent that conveys to the viewer the uninterrupted joie de vivre of the common people, despite winter hardship and cold.
Jaroslav František Julius Věšín (23 May 1860, Vrany - 9 May 1915) was a Czech painter who worked mainly in Bulgaria and was known as a master of genre painting. The realistic depiction of battle scenes from the First Balkan War (1912) is the subject of a substantial part of his work. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, but moved to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1881 and graduated in 1883.
