Front of Poseidon temple in Paestum, Italy.
The temple was built around the middle of the 5th century BC. In a strikingly pure Doric style, it is one of the best-preserved Greek temples in Europe.
Paestum is the classic Roman name for Poseidonia, an important city from ancient Magna Graecia, the Ancient Greek colonized area in the south of present-day Italy. The impressive ruins of Paestum were discovered by chance around 1750, when King Charles IV of Naples had road works carried out in the region.
