The Frame (El marco in Spanish) is a 1938 self-portrait by Frida. The painting depicts Kahlo's self-portrait in oil on an aluminium plate framed in glass, which she bought at a market in Oaxaca, Mexico. Although the glass frame is part of the painting, the flowers, birds and other details on the frame were painted before they were bought by Kahlo.
This work is the first one sold to the Louvre by a woman.
Magdalena Carmen Frida y Calderón (Coyoacán, Mexico, 6 July 1907 - 13 July 1954) was a Mexican surrealist painter.
Frida's work is characterised by cheerful colours, but contrasted with an alienating atmosphere. She did not shy away from controversy.
