Frida made two still lifes. One is in New York and the other is in her museum. Both were painted after the wife of Mexico's then president Manuel Avila Camacho requested them. But the First Lady rejected them because she found many erotic signs. The frame, designed by the artist, is reminiscent of a womb. Hayden Herrera wrote about this work: "Frida's imperfect fruit seems to have struggled to survive in the dry land of Mexico. While she has done so, we are reminded of Frida as a survivor, and in this way her still lifes are a kind of self-portrait, far from motifs with certain colours and shapes without meaning, they represent a drama of a higher range.
Magdalena Carmen Frida y Calderón (Coyoacán, Mexico, 6 July 1907 - 13 July 1954) was a Mexican surrealist painter.
Frida's work is characterised by cheerful colours, but contrasted with an alienating atmosphere. She did not shy away from controversy.
