In a bold pose reminiscent of harem scenes and odalisques, Princess Leonilla of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn leans back on a low Turkish sofa in this portrait on a veranda overlooking a lush tropical landscape. Only her untouchable social position made it possible for Franz Xaver Winterhalter to use such a sensual pose for a full-length portrait in Paris in 1843.
Known for her great beauty and intellect, the princess shines in a luxurious dress of ivory silk moiré with a pink sash around her waist. A deep purple cloak wraps around her back and falls over her smooth arms. Under carefully arched eyebrows, her heavy eyelids stare languidly at the viewer as she artfully plays with the large pearls around her neck. Winterhalter contrasted lush fabrics and vibrant colours with creamy flesh to enhance the sensuality of the pose, the model and the opulent surroundings.
Franz Xaver Winterhalter (Menzenschwand, Black Forest, Baden-Württemberg, 20 April 1805 - Frankfurt am Main, Hesse, 8 July 1873) was a German portrait painter of the 19th century. He worked for many royal courts including that of Belgium.
