Der Blaue Reiter (the Blue Rider) was a small group of like-minded artists in Germany, which existed from about 1911 to 1914. The innovation movement originated in Munich. It often depicted a blue horse, while here there are two horses, also one in black.
Franz Marc (Munich, 8 February 1880 - Braquis, 4 March 1916) was a German expressionist painter. Franz Marc tried to convey emotions with colours, each colour having its own symbolism and meaning.
He focused mainly on animal portraits, trying to capture the inner essence of the animal rather than its outer appearance. Here, the colour symbolism he developed played a major role. Influenced by Cubism, he also greatly simplified forms. As a result, his paintings tended increasingly towards the abstract. His last works clearly refer to the true expressiveness of abstract expressionism.
