Polynices or Polyneikes (literally disputant) is a figure from Greek mythology. Polyneices was the son of Oedipus and Iocaste, who quarreled with his twin brother Eteocles over the government of Thebes. After their father Oedipus abdicated and went into exile, the two brothers had agreed to take turns to sit on the throne for a year each time. After the first year, however, Eteocles did not want to abdicate the throne. Polyneices turned to his father-in-law Adrastus, who organised the march of the seven against Thebes. The brothers died in a duel in the process. Frans Francken II (Antwerp, Brabant, Flanders, Belgium 1581 - 6 May 1642) was a southern Dutch painter of the Baroque period.
