Frankfurt (Oder) is a city in the German federal state of Brandenburg. The city lies on the west bank of the River Oder and borders the Republic of Poland.
Since 1999, Frankfurt has had the additional designation "Kleiststadt" (Kleist City) after its most famous resident, Heinrich von Kleist. Frankfurt (Oder) also became a university city in 1991 with the founding of the European University Viadrina.
