The start of the Nijmegen Four Day Walk. Early in the morning, walkers cross Nijmegen's Waal bridge at dawn. They start their day in Elst, walking a distance of 30, 40 or even 50 kilometres. Getting up very early allowed me to take this photo so that the silhouette of the bridge and the walkers contrasted nicely with the beautiful colourful sunrise.
The Nijmegen Marches, since 2021 written as 4Daagse and officially called the International Four-Day Distance Marches Nijmegen, is a four-day walking event that has been held every year since 1909 and starts on the third Tuesday of July. The Nijmegen Marches is the oldest and most famous four-day walking event in the Netherlands. It is the largest multi-day walking performance event in the world and is now also known as The Walk of the World. Each year, participants from around eighty countries take part, including a large number of military personnel.
