During my trip to Zanzibar I was looking for special places to photograph and record. It was a sweltering day when I came across this old, abandoned bicycle in a narrow street. The bike was weathered and rusted and had clearly served it well for many years.
I decided to take a picture of the bike because for me it was the perfect metaphor of Zanzibar's historical and cultural diversity. It was an atmospheric and intriguing image that I loved to capture to document my journey.
As a photographer it is important to have a sense of atmosphere and to look for the hidden beauty in the world around us. This old, abandoned bicycle was a perfect example of how beauty and character can hide in the most unexpected and unlikely places.
