The Belogradchik Fortress is located right by the city and is locally called "Kaleto". It is one of the best preserved fortresses in Bulgaria and it is a cultural monument. The walls of the fortress are up to two meters thick and twelve meters high and the fortress covers an area of 10,210 square meters. The Roman fortress was built in the first century with the high rocks as natural protection. The fortress was regularly destroyed and rebuilt. The present Belogradchik Fortress was built at the beginning of the 19th century during the Ottoman rule.
