Djupivogur is a village on a fjord in eastern Iceland. Once it seems to have been 30.5 degrees, the highest temperature ever measured in the country. But when we arrived there in July 2005 it was just very foggy.
Although Djupivogur has only a few hundred inhabitants, there is a soccer club in the village. And they are playing against a neighboring village on this foggy evening. Both goalkeepers can barely see each other's goal. Two girls are watching from behind the goal.
Every time the Netherlands play an international match against Iceland, I think of that night again. Because only 300,000 people live in Iceland it is not inconceivable that among the 22 men on this field there were (future or former) internationals.
Because the original photograph was somewhat bleak due to the weather conditions, I upgraded it to an atmospheric digital painting.
