About ‘Fontana del Bernini in St Peter's Square (Vatican)’ by Thomas Bugdoll

St Peter's Square (Italian: Piazza San Pietro) was laid out by Gian Lorenzo Bernini between 1656 and 1667 under Pope Alexander VII (1655-1667) in front of St Peter's Basilica in Rome. St Peter's Square is part of the territory of Vatican City. The colonnades form the national border between the Vatican City and Italy.

There are two fountains in St Peter's Square, which are identical except for the coats of arms on them. The fountain in front of the cathedral on the left was completed by Bernini in 1675.
