The Flying Tigers or First American Volunteer Group operated as part of the Chinese Air Force in 1941-1942. The pilots were civilian volunteers at first, but after presidential approval, pilots from the US Air Force, Navy and Marines were also allowed to participate.
The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk was an American fighter aircraft of World War II. The prototype made its maiden flight on 15 October 1938 and the aircraft was used until the end of World War II. A total of 13,738 aircraft were produced until November 1944, at the Curtiss factory in Buffalo, New York.
The design was derived from the P-36 Hawk, which allowed the aircraft to enter production quickly. In the United States, the aircraft was known as the Warhawk, while in the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom it was called Tomahawk or Kittyhawk, depending on the variant.
