About ‘Flower in Ice.’ by Jan Talmon

This was an experiment involving encasing a flower in ice and then photographing it. I didn’t use distilled water, which is why you can see quite a few air bubbles in the ice.

Technically speaking, you start by freezing a thin layer of water in a dish. Then you place the flower on top and add a small layer of water, which you then freeze again. You repeat this until the flower is completely encased in ice. This is how you gradually build up the ice block. If you freeze a whole container of water straight away, the flower will float, and you won’t get the desired effect. To photograph the flower properly, you have to work quickly, because in the summer when I took this photo, the ice naturally melts quite quickly.

For the past three years, I’ve been studying to become a professional photographer in Belgium. In 2025, I completed a mentorship in documentary photography, for which I produced a series of photographs on the theme of ‘Connection in public spaces’. At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. Details on the exact delivery date will be sent after placement of the order. Depending on the shipping country the following delivery times apply:

Is your order a gift for someone? We can create you a gift voucher that displays the artwork(s) you ordered, so you have something to give while the artwork is being printed. Just send us an e-mail and we’ll take care of it.

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers, mainly UPS and DHL (Depending on the country where it is delivered, this may vary). Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
