Floating ice floes in the Jökulsárlón glacial lake, Iceland.
Jökulsárlón is the most famous and largest glacial lake in Iceland. It is located south of the Vatnajökull glacier between the Skaftafell National Park and the town of Höfn.
With a depth of about 250 meters, Jökulsárlón is the deepest lake in the country. The lake is popular with tourists because of the ever floating icebergs with beautiful ice formations.
The Jökulsárlón glacial lake is located close to the Atlantic Ocean and is separated from it by a very narrow strip of land. This strip of land is intersected by a river that drains the melt water. As the lake grows, it is feared that the lake may one day become a deep bay that flows directly into the ocean from the tongue of the glacier.
