About ‘Fleeting Youth’ by Waterside Studio

When I painted this in 2014, I wanted to explore how the cosmetic industry manipulates our idea of beauty and challenge what it even means to be "beautiful." The woman in the painting has this huge, exaggerated white hair and is holding a syringe in one hand and a little pig in the other. She’s about to inject the pig, which symbolizes all the cosmetic procedures people undergo to try and stay young. The pig stands for sacrifice and experimentation, reflecting the ethical concerns that come with these practices.

Through a mix of playfulness and discomfort, this piece looks at how society turns the human body into a product in the endless pursuit of staying young. It questions our obsession with youth. Aging is natural, and getting older doesn’t mean losing beauty! We can appreciate beauty at every age.
