Around the Platte Stenenbrug in Alkmaar there are many cafes with plenty of sunny terraces. The pubs organize various activities such as the Brugtheater Festival and various live music performances.
The predecessor of the Platte Stenenbrug over the Verdronkenoord was the Hoge Stenenbrug (from before 1658). The fish market was held on this bridge. At that time there was already a Platte Stenenbrug, around the corner, near the Mient.
In 1888 an entirely new steel bridge was placed. This bridge was lower than the bridge at the Mient, and took over the name. Since then this bridge has been called the Platte Stenenbrug.
