I was able to photograph this group of flamingos in the Veluwemeer lake. The group consists of two species: the Chilean Flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis) and the Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus). The most notable differences are that the Chilean is somewhat smaller and half its bill is black. The Greater Flamingo is thus larger, has less black on its bill and has pink legs. Most probably, these flamingos come from the most northern breeding area in Europe: the Zwillbrocker Venn in Germany just across the border near Groenlo. The two species from the other side of the Atlantic are escaped birds, or descendants thereof. Of the Great Flamingos, it is less clear. It is probably a mixing group of feral and ?true' wild specimens.
