The bald eagle is an imposing, very large bird of prey ('flying door') of wetlands. Lives on fish, waterfowl and also carrion, especially when there is ice. Long a rare winter visitor, but nowadays even a breeding bird in the Netherlands in increasing numbers (2018: 14 pairs). Slow, deep wing beat, but often hovers on thermals in spring, summer and autumn. Usually solitary, but sea eagles may concentrate in places with plenty of food. Very large bird of prey with broad, fingered wings, distant protruding head and short, wedge-shaped tail. Adult birds with white tail, light head and yellow bill. Juvenile birds dark brown with light patches on body, narrow light band on lower wings and largely dark bill. Wings are held straight and not in a V as golden eagle, buzzard, and marsh harrier do.
