About the artwork

The Fiat 500 was a revolutionary car in its day. It revolutionized car design and production. It was produced from 1965 to 1972 and was known affectionately as Cinquecento. It had a small, bubble-shaped body with circular headlights and short overhangs and diminutive proportions. It was designed by Italian industrialist Dante Giacosa. This car is regarded as the first modern city car and was ideal for zipping through traffic and maneuvering through tight parking spaces.

This vehicle was the first to come equipped with a rear-hinged, fold-down sunroof. It was a surprisingly versatile vehicle, as it had both a standard folding sunroof and a folding, manual sunroof. The car's design also gave it an unmistakable Italian accent. Its short wheelbase and length made it easy to navigate the narrow streets of Italy.

This model had three engines and many options. The original version was powered by a 132-horsepower engine and was known as the Nuova 500. The second version, the Giardiniera, was equipped with a 280-horsepower engine. It was sold from 1968 to 1975. It had a 1.3-liter, four-cylinder engine and was built with a 5-speed manual transmission. The Lusso model came in two versions, the Giardiniera and the Lusso. Both were called the "Rinnovata." The Rinnovata 500 R, which was introduced in 1967, had a larger 594 cc engine and a full-length sunroof.
