The mallard is the largest and most common swimming duck in Europe and the ancestral form of the domestic duck. Adult males in mating dress are distinctive with their green metallic head, yellow bill and white neck ring, females are more inconspicuous light brown with orange bill.
Mallards are found throughout most of Eurasia, extreme northern Africa, and much of North America, and have been introduced as breeding birds in New Zealand and Australia.
