About "Falaise d'Aval , an arch of rock in the sea"

About the artwork

The rock arches of white limestone and beaches at Étretat is known to many. The famous arches and white cliffs were an inspiration to Claude Monet and other Impressionist painters long ago in the 19th century. Étretat lie on the west coast of France and let west happen to be just the direction where the sun sets. These elements all together can make for a beautiful picture.

This rocky arch has been given the name Falaise d'Aval. When you walk along Etretat's promenade, you look out over the chalk cliff, which is really enjoyable. By the way, you can also get to the top of the rock via some stairs. From there you have beautiful views over the coast and the village of Étretat. It's worth the climb.

The rock arch is the result of natural erosion by powerful winds and the waves of the Antlantic Ocean. The soft limestone has been worn away , creating this arch. Eventually, over time, the arch will disappear completely but that will take some time.
