The Eyjafjallajökull volcano has a notorious status. Since the last ice age, the volcano has made itself heard several times and the last eruption was in 2010, when it paralysed a large part of the air traffic in Western Europe.
The stratovulcano is not far away from Vík í Mýrdal and the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. At its highest point it is 1,651 meters high and the crater is 3-4 kilometers in diameter. The southern side of the volcano was once part of the coastline, but in the course of thousands of years and various eruptions, the coastline has now retreated about five kilometres due to the hardened lava.
