A grebe swims with a young on its back in the water. Young grebes are taken this way by the parent in the first weeks of life for protection from predatory fish and herons. They also explore the world this way.
A young grebe looks considerably different from an adult grebe. A young grebe is black and white striped with some red accents on the head. An adult grebe is more colourful with a distinctive orange collar and black feathers on the head. It also has distinctive ear tufts of feathers on the head.
Grebes are common in Europe and South Africa. They are partly migratory birds, but can also winter in the Netherlands.
