About "Expedition Spitsbergen Eternal Ice"

About the artwork

Pure nature, that's Spitsbergen. No electricity pylons, no condensation trails in the sky and no mobile phone network. Glaciers, ice floes and those pointed, snow-covered mountains that gave the archipelago its name. Spitsbergen, nothing could be more fitting.

Midnight sun, no thought of sleep. The surrounding nature is too impressive, the Arctic landscape too alien.

Immersion in a new world. Astonishment. And relax the eye. What a vastness. Almost infinite. Moods of light. Images of the sky. Water that looks like a mirror with crystals. Glaciers shimmering in unnatural turquoise. Colours that cannot be surpassed in clarity. And me, in the middle of it all. On an old lady, the MS Nordstjernen from the Hurtigruten fleet. Formerly a mail ship, an icebreaker.

Takes us all the way to the eternal ice. Breaks up ice floe after ice floe. Until she gets stuck with a loud noise, nothing works anymore. End of the line. The 80th parallel is behind us.

Now we're going back. Unfortunately. But Spitsbergen won't let me go. It has captured me with its clarity and tranquillity. My dreamland of ice and snow - and lots of clear Arctic water!
