Exmoor ponies in the Helders dunes with the lighthouse at the back. The Helders dunes are home to Exmoor ponies, a primal breed of horse that fits perfectly into this dynamic landscape. These semi-wild ponies, originally from England, are known for their robust build, thick coat and natural survival instinct. In the Helders Dunes, they have the freedom to graze and roam, helping to preserve the unique dune landscape.
The ponies play a crucial role in managing the area. Through their grazing, they keep the landscape open and prevent bushes and trees from crowding out the marram grass and flowers. This creates a varied flora and fauna, in which birds, butterflies and other animals thrive.
Walking through the dunes, you can often see Exmoor ponies in small groups, grazing quietly or sheltering from the wind. Their natural behaviour and presence add a special element to the Helders dunes. They remind us of the power and harmony of nature and make a walk through this area a unique experience
