In the Groningen village of Onderdendam, the characteristic windmill towers above the houses, beautifully reflected in the calm waters of the Boterdiep. At dusk, the sky turns soft shades of orange, pink and purple, which combine with the clouds and reflecting water to create a picturesque scene. The water lilies in the foreground enhance the calm, idyllic atmosphere and lead the eye to the historic mill.

Onderdendam, located north of the city of Groningen, developed as an important centre of trade and shipping in the 17th century thanks to the Boterdiep. The mill, originally built as a corn and flour mill, played an essential role in the agricultural society of the village and the surrounding region. Like many other Groningen villages, Onderdendam still breathes the atmosphere of days gone by, with its old bridges, characteristic houses and the mill as an eye-catcher.

The photo captures not only the beauty of the evening sky, but also the confluence of nature and cultural history. The interplay of water, cloudy sky and architecture emphasises the unique charm of the Groningen landscape and the role mills have played in Dutch history for centuries.
