The European Rhinoceros Beetle gets its name from the relatively large horn-like spine on the male's head. This hardened 'horn' is used to knock over competitors and is not used for defence. The European Rhinoceros Beetle is the largest species of this beetle in western Europe, almost all other species are inhabitants of tropical regions.
