The European Bison is one of the largest mammals found in Europe. It is a vulnerable species, but thanks to breeding programmes set up in the early 20th century, the European Bison has been saved from extinction. Populations of wild European Bisons are found in Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Germany and Romania. In the Netherlands and Belgium, small populations of these animals have been kept in parks and nature reserves since 1975. The European Bison is a ruminant found in forest environments. They eat vegetation from the forest floor, from shrubs and leaves, shoots and even bark from trees.
