This scene is based on an incident narrated in three New Testament gospels: a raging storm breaks out as Jesus and his disciples cross the Sea of Galilee to spread the message of Christ. To the disciples' surprise, Jesus calms the wind and storm, dramatising the strength of the Christian faith. Delacroix produced several variations on this theme in 1853 and 1854, when this particular biblical subject became popular among French Catholics during the reign of Louis-Napoléon (reg. 1852-70).
Ferdinand Victor Eugene Delacroix (Charenton-Saint Maurice, France, 26 April 1798 - Paris, 13 August 1863) is considered the most important French painter of the Romantic period (hence he is sometimes called "Le prince des romantiques"). He is also called a "literary painter".
