Ernst Josephson (1851-1906) was a Swedish painter and poet, known for his portraits and folkloristic themes. He studied in Stockholm, Paris and other European cities. Josephson's works combine romantic and mystical elements, such as the well-known painting *Strömkarlen*. He was a co-founder of the artists' association *Opponenterna* and later suffered from mental health problems due to a syphilis infection. Despite his health problems, he left behind a significant artistic legacy that lives on in Swedish museums.
