Erfurt Cathedral Square at night – Old Town Festival 2026 and the Cathedral illuminated

by Mixed media vector arts

The photograph shows a night-time panoramic view of Erfurt’s Cathedral Square. The illuminated St Mary’s Cathedral, with its two striking towers, rises serenely above the square, whilst below it the Old Town Festival unfolds with fairground rides, lights and stalls. The colour palette ranges from the deep blue of the night sky, through warm yellow and gold tones on the historic façades, to the colourful lighting accents of the festival installations. Streets, roofs and the square come together to form a clearly structured urban landscape.

Inspiration: a quiet observation of the interplay between history and the present. Whilst taking the photograph, my aim was to capture the contrast between the centuries-old sacred architecture and the temporary festival culture. The long exposure time makes the lights of the Old Town Festival appear soft, without obscuring the clear form of the cathedral. This creates an atmosphere of nocturnal concentration, urban vitality and a certain distance that allows space for contemplation. This motif suits modern, urban and minimalist interior styles particularly well, but also complements classic or Scandinavian concepts with its clear structure. Artistic genres such as contemporary urban photography, architectural photography and night photography are reflected here. In an interior setting, the image acts as a tranquil focal point, creating a sense of space whilst also establishing a regional connection. Erfurt’s Cathedral Square is one of Thuringia’s most significant historic squares. St Mary’s Cathedral has shaped the cityscape since the Middle Ages. In conjunction with the Old Town Festival, this location becomes a symbol of the ongoing life of a historic city, captured in a single nocturnal moment.
