The northernmost point of Texel is marked by lighthouse Eierland. This lighthouse, which is only 34 metres high, stands on top of a dune, making it highly visible for shipping and other lighthouses. The lighthouse had become necessary during construction in 1864, because many ships had perished in the passage between Texel and Vlieland. At that time, Texel only had a small fire beacon, so it was decided to build the bright red, photogenic lighthouse.
