About the artwork

Realistic acrylic painting of the French painter Edouard Cortes, painted by the Dutch fine artist Paul Meijering - the original painting is 90 x 120 cm and part of a permanent collection.

Édouard Cortès (Lagny-sur-Marne, 6 August 1882 - there, 26 November 1969) was one of the leading French painters from the Groupe de Lagny.

His mother was Leontine Frappart and his father Antonio Cortès. In rue des Etuves, 5 was his birthplace. His father, Antonio, was himself a deserving animal painter and teacher of his 3 children: André, Jeanne and Edouard. He was involved in the formation of the Groupe de Lagny, in 1885, along with Leo Gausson, Cavallo-Peduzzi, Maximilien Luce and Lucien Pissarro, son of the famous impressionist Camille Pissarro.

Edouard bought Cavallo-Petuzzi's former studio, at Lagny-sur-Marne, in 1910, and he befriended Pierre Montézin there. In 1914, in Paris, he married Fernande Joyeuse, who, however, already died in 1918. In 1916, his daughter Simone was born, in Paris.

During World War I, he was drafted into the French infantry. At the front, he was able to gain credit for drawing out enemy positions.

In 1919 he married again in Paris, this time to his first wife's sister, Lucienne Joyeuse, and in 1920 he went to live in Lagny again, this time in rue Macheret.

Before 1907, when the Union Artistique et Littéraire du canton de Lagny ceased to exist, he had already exhibited at its Salons, barely 16 years old.

From its foundation in 1926 until 1947, he led the Union des Beaux-Arts de Lagny as industrious president, with Pierre Montézin as honorary president.

He exhibited his neo-impressionist works in dozens of French cities. He also appeared internationally on several occasions in Austria, Canada, England, Switzerland and the United States.
