This flood barrier is a lockable storm surge barrier and contains large gates that can be closed during heavy storms, whether combined with a spring tide or not, preventing the high tide from entering the Oosterschelde. At an expected water level of +3.00 m NAP (measuring point Roompot Buiten), the gates are closed from the control room in the Ir. J.W. Topshuis on Neeltje Jans. If no one is present here, the gates will automatically close at +3 m NAP. Since commissioning in 1986, the gates have been closed 27 times (see below), apart from test closures. Closing the barrier takes about 75 minutes source wikipedia .
