The Dutch set fire to English ships during the voyage to Chatham, 20 June 1667.
The Trip to Chatham or the Battle of the Medway (English: Raid on the Medway of The Dutch Raid) was a successful Dutch attack on the English war fleet and shipyards in June 1667 during the Second Anglo-Dutch War. The Dutch, under the command of Admiral Michiel de Ruyter and under the direct supervision of Deputy Cornelis de Witt in the field, bombed Sheerness, raised the Thames to Gravesend, then sailed up the Medway to Chatham, the main English naval base since 1560, where they sunk three large and ten small ships and brought the HMS Unity and HMS Royal Charles, the pride and flagship of the English fleet, to the Netherlands. It was the greatest loss ever to the English Navy and led to a rapid end to the war.
Jan van Leyden (active 1661-1693), was a Dutch painter from the Golden Age. Little is known about his life, but he lived and worked in Rotterdam and is known for his marines, often from specific naval battles.
