Dushi Donkeys in Willemstad by Renata Rolefes Art

Dushi Ezels in Willemstad brings together two cheerful donkeys against one of Curaçao’s most recognisable and colourful backdrops. With their big eyes, funny glasses and curious expressions, they playfully take centre stage, whilst behind them the colourful façades of the Handelskade along Sint Annabaai sparkle.

The two donkeys each have their own personality. One wears striking glasses, whilst the other has decked itself out in a cheerful yellow bow tie. They seem to be out and about together in Willemstad, popping up briefly for the camera. A little cheeky, a little mischievous and, above all, wonderfully cheerful.

The painting is built up from multiple layers of acrylic paint, applied with palette knives, expressive brushstrokes and playful splashes of paint. The warm colours of the donkeys complement the pink, yellow, orange and turquoise façades in the background beautifully. The bright blue water and the light sky give the painting a fresh, sunny feel.

‘Dushi Donkeys in Willemstad’ is more than just a cheerful animal portrait or cityscape. It brings together two recognisable aspects of Curaçao: the colourful charm of Willemstad and the island’s beloved donkeys. A playful work of art full of colour, humour and Caribbean joie de vivre.
