Drenkelingenhuisje Terschelling
Wooden house on high poles in the sand

Terschelling has a lot of secluded houses in the forest or in the dunes, but one house is the crowning glory. From Heartbreak Hotel, the 'last' beach pavilion of the island, it is another seven kilometers walk to the Drenkelingenhuisje. Now this wooden house on high poles in the endless sandy plain is ideal for eating a sheltered sandwich, but for many shipwrecked people it meant their salvation. Whoever managed to reach this shelter through the swirling surf hoisted the carrying, a kind of openwork ball, as a call for help.
In 2015, the Drenkelingenhuisje itself was saved. After sinking to such an extent that it was in danger of disappearing under the sand, it was restored and put back a lot closer to the dunes. Now this striking appearance stands between Paal 23 and Paal 24 and it's a popular destination for hikers, because let's face it, those seven kilometers over the beach to get there are seven very nice kilometers.

I am Ed van der Hilst and since 2006 I have been photographing landscapes with great pleasure, to digitally capture our beautiful Netherlands.
Later I also started photographing our dogs and animals.
My newest challenge is to capture the birds in our polders from Voorne and Putten.
I like to capture the best of our nature and experiment with compositions.
As a former Rotterdammer, this city should not be missing in my portfolio.
