Drawing of an Oosterschelde lobster by Debbie van Eck

At the centre of the image is a large lobster, depicted symmetrically against a smooth, light beige background. The lobster has a strikingly colourful and painterly appearance. The drawing is composed of many small brushstrokes, dots and patches of colour, giving the whole a look reminiscent of a combination of watercolour, digital painting and a natural history illustration.
The colour palette is particularly rich. The main colours are:
• dark brown and almost black on the body;
• golden yellow and ochre on the claws;
• bright orange on the antennae and small accents;
• turquoise and deep blue on the legs and tail;
• white and light grey for highlights;
• small amounts of red, yellow and purple as decorative splashes of colour. The colours are not applied evenly, but appear to consist of countless tiny dots, smudges and brushstroke-like marks. This gives the lobster a lively, almost impressionistic look.
Background and composition
The background is a completely solid beige/taupe, which ensures that the lobster stands out clearly against it.
The composition is almost centred and vertically symmetrical: the lobster appears to be looking directly at the viewer, with its claws at the top, its body in the centre and its tail pointing downwards. The long orange antennae break this symmetry and add a sense of movement.
In short: it is a colourful, hand-painted-looking illustration of a lobster viewed from above, with large golden-brown claws, long bright-orange antennae, a dark and richly detailed body, striking blue legs and a blue tail fan, set against a calm beige background.
