The real dragonflies (Anisoptera) are an infraorder of insects belonging to the order dragonflies (Odonata). Dragonflies are the largest insects in Europe, all species become large to very large. Dragonflies and their larvae are without exception carnivores that eat smaller animals, mainly other insects. Adult dragonflies are active during the day and prefer to hunt during the day in warm and sunny weather.
The infraorder was first scientifically described by Edmond de Selys Longchamps (1813 - 1900), a Belgian senator and also a naturalist, in 1854. In the Dutch language, names such as 'paardenbijters' and 'wartbijters' are also used.
